A new era in fungal sciences: welcoming Panfungi

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is with great honor and excitement that I introduce Panfungi, a new international journal dedicated to advancing research across the full spectrum of fungal sciences. As the founding Editor-in-Chief, I extend a warm and sincere welcome to researchers, educators, and fungal enthusiasts worldwide who share our fascination with this remarkable kingdom of life.

Fungi are not merely organisms of academic interest; they are vital contributors to a sustainable future. As a lifelong advocate of the tripartite cycle of plant-animal-fungi, an integrated agricultural system that combines mushroom cultivation with plant and animal farming, I have witnessed how fungi bridge the critical gaps between plants, animals, and human well-being. They serve as nutrient recyclers, architects of symbiosis, and wellsprings of economic innovation. They provide essential resources such as food, medicine, industrial materials, and ecological solutions. Yet, for too long, fungal sciences have remained underrepresented in mainstream biological research. Panfungi is founded to change that, by establishing an inclusive, interdisciplinary platform for high-quality research that highlights the unique and global significance of fungi.

"Pan" means "all". The name Panfungi reflects our goal to embrace every facet of fungal research, which also distinguishes the journal from its peers. We welcome submissions across all areas of fungal research, including not only true fungi in the traditional sense, but also slime molds (Myxomycetes) from the Protozoa and oomycetes from the Stramenopiles. Our scope ranges from fundamental disciplines such as systematics, genetics, ecology, and pathology, to applied fields including agriculture, medicine, industrial biotechnology, food science, environmental remediation, and beyond. Our mission is to foster collaboration across disciplines and continents, translating fundamental discoveries into practical solutions for pressing global challenges, including food security, environmental sustainability, and public health.

We envision Panfungi as a catalyst for innovation, a forum for vibrant scientific exchange, and a beacon for emerging trends in mycology. Supported by an international editorial board of distinguished experts, we are committed to maintaining rigorous peer review, high ethical standards, and broad visibility for all published work.
