Wenxiu
From diversity comes selection, and from selection comes a new cultivar.
Bred by the Flower Research Institute of the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, ‘Wenxiu’ was selected from more than one hundred elite yellow rose plants after years of evaluation. Its full form, luminous goose-yellow petals, stable colour, long vase life and strong adaptability embody the outcomes of deliberate cultivation and selection.
The cultivar carries another layer of meaning. Its name was chosen through a public campaign in memory of Huang Wenxiu, whose commitment to rural communities left a lasting legacy. After authorization was received from her family, the rose was formally named ‘Wenxiu’ and introduced to Baini Village, where it will continue to bloom.
A cultivated plant is never only its phenotype. Behind every new variety lies a reservoir of biological variation, a history of selection, and a relationship between people and their living resources. ‘Wenxiu’ offers a vivid reminder that agrobiodiversity is not merely conserved in gene banks or fields, but also expressed through the plants we cultivate, value and pass on.
