Integrative Perspectives on Rice
Rice is a cornerstone of global food security, providing the staple diet for billions. Because rice sits at the intersection of biology, environment and society, the scientific questions it poses are inherently interdisciplinary. Advances in genomics and phenomics now allow us to dissect complex traits and mine diverse landraces and wild relatives for resilience traits; agronomic innovation seeks to reconcile productivity with reduced water input, lower emissions and healthier agroecosystems; and social-scientific work examines how gender, markets, seed systems and local knowledge influence which varieties persist and who benefits from innovation. Addressing emerging threats, from accelerating climate variability to evolving pests, from nutritional insufficiency to resource constraints, requires integrative research that connects genes to fields to food systems.
The proposed Special Issue of Agrobiodiversity, Integrative Perspectives on Rice, aims to highlight comprehensive, interdisciplinary studies of rice from a truly global perspective. We invite contributions that deepen our understanding of rice genetic diversity and breeding, sustainable agronomic practices, cutting-edge multi-omics study, and the socioeconomic dimensions of rice production and consumption.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Rice pangenome analyses, gene discovery and functional genomics.
• Molecular breeding of rice and genome-editing applications for rice improvement.
• Transgenic rice development, biosafety assessment, and regulatory studies specific to engineered rice.
• Comparative rice genomics and integrative omics research.
• Rice phenomics, high-throughput measurement of rice traits, and trait-mapping for agronomic performance.
• Conservation, characterization and utilization of rice genetic resources, including landraces and wild rice relatives.
• Design, evaluation and scaling of sustainable rice cultivation practices and rice-based agroecological systems.
• Water-saving irrigation strategies for rice and their effects on rice yield.
• Field experiments, long-term trials and system-level modeling of rice cropping scenarios and rice production systems.
• Assessments of rice ecosystem impacts, such as greenhouse-gas emissions from rice paddies, rice soil and nutrient cycling, and on-farm biodiversity in rice landscapes.
• Case studies and comparative reviews that connect rice agrobiodiversity to rural development, resilience and adaptation.
We invite researchers worldwide to submit original research articles, reviews, perspective, and short communications that align with the above themes. Manuscripts should address global or local aspects of rice biology, cultivation, genetics or socioeconomics. We believe this Special Issue will serve the audience of agrobiodiversity researchers by assembling a collection of cutting-edge rice studies that span disciplines and regions. Authors are encouraged to highlight novel insights into rice genetic resources, cultivation methods, or socio-environmental interactions. We look forward to your contributions to advancing rice science for a more sustainable and food-secure future.

Submission Deadline
The deadline for manuscript submissions is December 31st, 2026, but we can accommodate extensions on a case-by-case basis. All papers will be published as open-access articles upon acceptance.
