Chemical insights in biomass and waste conversion
The sustainable transformation of biomass and waste into valuable chemicals, fuels, and materials is central to addressing global challenges such as resource scarcity, environmental pollution, and climate change. However, the complex and heterogeneous nature of biomass and waste feedstocks presents significant scientific and technological hurdles. A deep understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and catalytic processes is essential to optimize these conversion pathways and unlock their full potential.
To date, research has made strides in thermochemical (e.g., pyrolysis, gasification) and biochemical (e.g., enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation) conversion processes, as well as catalytic strategies to enhance selectivity and efficiency. Yet, gaps remain in deciphering reaction networks, scaling innovations, and integrating advanced tools like interpretable machine learning and multiscale modeling to bridge microscopic mechanisms with macroscopic performance. Furthermore, methodological breakthroughs—from in situ characterization to theoretical simulations—are urgently needed to accelerate mechanistic studies in these systems.
This Special Issue of Progress in Reaction Kinetics and Mechanism aims to compile cutting-edge research that advances chemical insights across the biomass and waste valorization chain. We invite contributions (original research, reviews, and perspectives) addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
● Reaction kinetics in thermochemical processes
● Reaction kinetics in biochemical processes
● Catalytic conversion of biomass and waste
● Interpretable machine learning
● Theoretical and numerical modelling
● Methodology innovation in mechanism study
● Other topics relating to chemical insights in biomass and waste conversion
